Managed Strategies

Everybody, including you, will have their own financial goals and different circumstances to take into consideration when thinking about their choice of pension fund. Taking your goals and circumstances into consideration, there are a few things you will no doubt want to bear in mind when deciding how to invest your pension savings.

  • What level of risk are you willing to take to achieve the return you are looking for?
  • How much time do you have until you retire and does this affect your choice in funds?
  • Are you putting all of your eggs in one basket?
  • and, will the arrangement you've chosen remain suitable over time?

With all of these things in mind, Scottish Life created Managed Strategies. Using sophisticated modelling tools, we worked with risk management consultants Barrie & Hibbert to create a range of nine benchmark asset allocation strategies, collectively know as Managed Strategies.

What are the Managed Strategies?

With clear objectives that will not change over time, our strategies not only take into account your risk appetite, but the time you have until retirement.

The mix of assets held within each strategy is determined by the Investment Advisory Committee (IAC) normally on a quarterly basis.  The asset allocation is based on the long term analysis by Barrie and Hibbert combined with short term investment opportunities which are highlighted to the IAC by Royal London Asset Management.  The IAC review both reports and from these set the asset allocation of each Managed Strategy for the next period.  Details of the IAC meetings can be found on the Meeting summaries page.

Why invest in Managed Strategies?

There are many benefits of Managed Strategies and these are covered in our Governanace Update Sales Aid but the key benefits are summarised below:

Governance - A regular review process to ensure all strategies remain appropriate.  This is done to ensure the strategies remain true to their risk and time profiles.

Automatic Updates - Clients invested in Managed Strategies will benefit from the IAC changes automatically and do not need to make any manual changes.

Rebalancing - Managed Strategies, as standard comes with monthly rebalancing.  If a strategy is not rebalanced regularly, the asset split can drift significantly over time and risk of the portfolio could change.

Flexibility - Managed Strategies offers the option to exchange the default equity option (Scottish Life Global Managed) with any of our other equity funds within our range.

Investment returns may fluctuate and are not guaranteed.  Price may go down as well as up.
