Managed Strategies

When thinking about their choice of pension fund all of our clients will have their own financial goals and circumstances to take into consideration. Therefore, there are probably a few things they might want to bear in mind when deciding how to invest their pension savings, such as:

  • What level of risk are they willing to take to achieve the return they are looking for?
  • Are they putting all of their eggs in one basket?
  • How long do they have until retirement?
  • and, will the portfolio they have chosen remain suitable over time?

With all of these things in mind, Scottish Life created Managed Strategies. Using sophisticated modelling tools, we worked with risk management consultants Barrie & Hibbert to create a range of nine benchmark asset allocation strategies, collectively known as Managed Strategies. These have clear objectives and are designed to grow at a faster rate than inflation over a specific time horizon with a pre-set level of risk.

What are the Managed Strategies?

With clear objectives that will not change over time, our strategies not only take into account a clients risk appetite, but are time based to ensure they are appropriate for our clients time until retirement.

The diagram below illustrates the basic structure for Managed Strategies. With three time horizons - short, medium and long - and three risk profiles - cautious, balanced and adventurous - we cater for most pension investors. Typically, portfolios with a higher risk profile will focus on growing capital, with medium and low risk portfolios gradually moving the focus towards reducing the risks and protecting the scheme investments.

Investment returns may fluctuate and are not guaranteed.  The price of units can go down as well as up.

The Scottish Life Managed funds are now being managed in line with the benchmarks outlined in red, although it should be noted that the funds are actively managed, meaning that the asset allocations can vary from that of the strategies above. However, any of the nine benchmarks can be replicated by using a combination of the funds available in our full range, including the Managed Strategies Fund Matrix

Lifestyling

Using the Strategies highlighted in red above, we’ve created an innovative lifestyle option, called the Managed Retirement Investment Strategy (Managed RIS). This strategy utilises the Scottish Life Adventurous Managed, Managed and Defensive Managed funds which now reflect the asset allocations of the Adventurous Long Term, Balanced Medium Term and Cautious Short Term portfolios respectively .  For further information on the Managed Retirement Investment Strategy and the other strategies we offer, please visit our Retirement Investment Strategies (RIS) page.

Full details of the actual allocation's of the 9 strategies can be viewed on our Benchmark Allocations page.  We have also set up an Investment Advisory Committee (IAC) who are responsible for monitoring the continued suitability of Managed Strategies.  To find out how the IAC go about this, please view our Managed Strategies Governance page.
