Change is coming
Those very helpful people at the Department for Work and Pensions (or the DWP as they like to be called) have struck gold again with a stonking new briefing pack for financial advisers. The 'State Pensions Reform - briefing pack for advisers' has been created for advisers who have clients that want to understand how they’ll be affected by the changes to the State pension landscape from 6 April 2010.
Unless you’ve been living under your desk for the last couple of years, you’ll be well aware that the dynamics of our State pensions are being shook to the core with a number of changes effective from 6 April 2010. These reforms include equalising the State Pension Age and reducing the number of qualifying years for full entitlement with the bottom line of making State pensions fairer and more widely available.
The DWP’s pack is over 30 pages long and includes both high-level stuff and more detailed fact sheets to get stuck into. Anyone who spends time advising people on issues affecting their retirement, or savings in general, should take a peep at the doc. The DWP reckon that it’ll be of particular interest to those advising the following groups:
- people approaching or past State Pension Age,
- those with spouses or civil partners who are approaching or past State Pension Age,
- and people with extensive caring responsibilities.
So if you fall into this category, or just want to check out what all the fuss is about, be sure to give it a read. You may just enjoy it.
