Communicating benefits

The worst thing about the world of employee benefits is so few employers get the credit they deserve for their good practice. The truth is that employees often fail to value - or even understand - the benefit provided.

And there's one simple reason for this: poor communication.

Good communication is key to the success of any staff benefit. It's no use providing a pension if your people don't understand or value it. But sadly for a lot of employers this proves to be the case. A survey carried out by Employee Benefits magazine revealed that 54% of employers believe that workers do not appreciate their benefits package while 63% say they struggle to communicate the benefits package. (Employee Benefits magazine, 2007).

All too often, communication is an afterthought - whereas it should be an integral part of implementing a staff pension. At Scottish Life, we place a great deal of importance on communication. We also acknowledge that every business is different and a one-size-fits-all approach will never work. So when planning the implementation of your pension plan, we'll work with you and your advisers to develop a communication strategy that suits your business and the needs of your employees.

Planning a stategy that works for youworksite marketing

We offer a range of professionally designed member communication material that can be used alongside your existing communication mechanisms to promote your pension to staff. We can provide everything from posters to leaflets, intranet content to full-scale multimedia presentations, all designed to educate employees about the importance of pension planning and generate interest in the pension you have set up.

But that's just the beginning of the story. We like nothing better than a challenge and regularly work together with our clients to come up with something different to meet a specific communications need. So if you have a specific requirement, talk to us about it. We'd love to work with you to come up with an effective solution.

Putting it all together

And it doesn't end there. We understand that pensions are only one part of your benefits strategy. Many employers offer a diverse range of benefits for their employees.

That's why we teamed up with leading benefits software provider, Vebnet, to develop our unique employee benefits administration and communication package, works4you. works4you is the perfect way to communicate with your employees and drive home the true value of all their benefits (not just the Scottish Life ones).

For your employees, works4you provides total reward statements, information on company policies and an advanced absence planner. For you it provides comprehensive reporting, streamlined benefits administration and a clever link to our online pension service to ensure that data stays up to date across the two systems. And if you're worried about extra costs, don't be - it's available at no extra charge for new Retirement Solutions schemes.
